Biographies
Dr. Mostafa Daneshgar was born in Iran in 1981 and started his studies on Shiite theology and Shiite jurisprudence in 1997. He continued these studies while also attending the School of Engineering. Mostafa Daneshgar earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Engineering from Iran in 2003, then immigrated to Syria, where he continued his religious studies at the Seminary of Zanabia at Damascus.
In September 2010, he immigrated to the United States and continued his studies and cultural activities. Mostafa attended the School of Engineering at Wayne State University and graduated with his Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering. In 2021, he received his Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Wayne State University, Detriot, MI.
Mr. Daneshgar has written more than 200 articles and speeches about Islam, Shiite, and relations between religions, specifically Shiite, as well as cultural and social challenges in Persian, Arabic, and English.
Br. Ahmad Rashid Salim is the Friday Prayer Imam and current ICCNC board member, and he is a Ph.D. student in Near Eastern Studies at UC Berkeley. He has been involved within the Muslim community in various roles and has taught a wide range of topics, including Islamic spirituality, ethics, community-building, youth outreach, and family conflict resolution. He's led inter-faith and intrafaith outreach efforts, and he has appeared on live programming with global viewership and spoken at various panels and conferences. He is also the author of an excellent introductory book on Islam titled “Islam Explained: A Short Introduction to History, Teachings, and Culture.”

Interfaith Gaza Ceasefire Pilgrimage by Interfaith Movement for Human Integrity
The ICCNC community will join the pilgrimage on Saturday, March 23, 2024, at 12:00 PM as the pilgrimage stops at the Center on its way to walk around Lake Merritt and stop at the First Congregation Church of Oakland for a press conference.
Join this interfaith pilgrimage dedicated to calling for a ceasefire in Gaza. We will use our bodies to map Gaza onto the East Bay, turning grief and rage into action as we pilgrimage together in unity, urging for an immediate and sustained ceasefire in Gaza.
Saturday, March 23rd, 7 am – 7 pm, East Bay, CA (Starting in Berkeley, ending in Alameda)
22-mile walk, symbolizing the distance from Gaza City to the Rafah Crossing refugee camp.
This daylong journey will include scheduled stops for collective prayer and action, with opportunities for participants to join for shorter legs.
Through this pilgrimage, we advocate for:
Enduring and Sustained Ceasefire
Immediate Flow of Life-Saving Aid
Release of All Hostages
End of Occupation for a Just Peace

On Saturday, March 16, 2024, at 6:30 PM, ICCNC will host its annual Ramadan Open House and Iftar sharing event. The event's purpose is to bring the greater community and neighbors together to break bread and share in a conversation about Islam and Muslims in the spirit of friendship, compassion, and generosity.
The Open House offers guests the opportunity to attend an engaging, interactive talk, socialize with their Muslim neighbors, and share in a traditional fast-breaking dinner known as iftar.
Program: Quranic recitation and translation, lecture about Ramadan by Br. Ahmad Rashid Salim, congregational sunset (Maghreb) prayer, and Iftar.

The Islamic Cultural Center of Northern California (ICCNC) will hold its fifth debate titled “Does cognitive science undermine religious belief?” on Saturday, February 24, 2024 at 10:00 AM (Los Angeles Time). Dr. Kelly James Clark and Dr. John Wathey will participate in the debate. Dr. Yaser Mirdamadi moderates this debate.
The purpose of these debates is to broaden and deepen the general public’s understanding of religion in the 21st century. The general theme of the debate series is Belief and Unbelief in a “Post-Secular Era.”
The debate will be live-streamed on Zoom and on ICCNC's YouTube Channel.
Dr. Kelly James Clark, Ph.D. (University of Notre Dame), is Distinguished Professor of Philosophy at Ibn Haldun University in Istanbul. He previously taught at Grand Valley State University, Calvin University, and Gordon College. Kelly has held visiting appointments at Oxford University, the University of St. Andrews, and the University of Notre Dame. He is the author, editor, or co-author of more than thirty books, including Abraham's Children: Liberty and Tolerance in an Age of Religious Conflict, Religion and the Sciences of Origins, Return to Reason, The Story of Ethics, When Faith Is Not Enough, and 101 Key Philosophical Terms of Their Importance for Theology. Philosophers Who Believe won third place in Christianity Today's books of the year.
Dr. John Wathey is a retired computational biologist whose interests include evolutionary algorithms, the biology of nervous systems, and the biological roots of religion. He got his PhD from the Department of Neurosciences at the University of California, San Diego, and spent most of his career working on computer simulations of protein folding. His first book, The Illusion of God’s Presence, explores the evolution of the emotions and intuitions behind religious belief, emphasizing behavioral and psychological research. His latest book is The Phantom God: What Neuroscience Reveals about the Compulsion to Believe. It relates the motivating forces behind religiousness to the neural circuitry of embodiment, mother-infant attachment, adult sexual pair-bonding, addiction, selective attention, hallucinations, and many other neurological surprises..
Dr. Yaser Mirdamadi is a researcher in medical ethics at the Institute of Ismaili Studies, London. In 2019, he received Ph.D. in Islamic and Middle East Studies from the University of Edinborough. He has an MA in Muslim Cultures from Aga Khan University, Institute for the Study of Muslim Civilizations (AKU-ISMC) London, UK, and an MA in Islamic Theology from Ferdowsi University Mashhad, Iran. Also, Dr. Mirdamadi completed a Level 3 Diploma (equivalent to a Master’s degree) in Classical Islamic studies from Hawza Ilmiyya (Islamic Seminary), Mashhad, Iran.
