(UPDATE: Seyyed Hossein Nasr is appearing on Friday, October 1 at 7 pm for Islam and Authors at ICCNC. He is also appearing at ICCNC on Saturday, Oct 2 at 6 pm to give his talk on Islamophobia, "How to be a Muslim in America Today." One $15 ticket will cover both events for general admission.).
Join us for an onstage conversation with Seyyed Hossein Nasr, one of the world’s leading teachers on Sufism and Islamic spirituality. Imam Zaid Shakir, nationally acclaimed Islamic scholar and teacher, and writer Jason van Boom will interview Prof. Nasr onstage about his new autobiographical book In Search of the Sacred. Our conversation will explore Prof. Nasr’s life, his intellectual and spiritual paths, and Islam and modernity. There will be a question-and-answer session and book signing as well. Islam and Authors is a program similar to City Arts and Lectures, but focusing on Islam.
Sure to be a key resource for decades to come, In Search of the Sacred: A Conversation with Seyyed Hossein Nasr on His Life and Thought illuminates Nasr's experiences and shares his insights on topics from religion and philosophy to science and the arts.
Based on a series of interviews, the book combines traditional autobiography with an exploration of the intellectual and spiritual trajectories of the author's thought during key periods of his life. In doing so, it presents a fascinating panorama, not only of the life and ideas of one man, but also of major events ranging from intellectual life in Iran during the Pahlavi period and the Iranian Revolution to some of the major religious and intellectual debates between Islam and modernism. Nasr writes that his "whole life has been a quest for the sacred." This work connects that quest with some of the most important issues of the day in encounters between Islam and the West.
Tickets: $10 general, $5 students.
Date and Time: Friday, October 1, 7 pm.

About Islam and Authors: Islam and Authors: Conversations Onstage uses a format similar to City Arts and Lectures, but focuses on Islam. Islam and Authors is the only Bay Area authors program dedicated to new books on Islam and Muslims. We feature both Muslim and non-Muslim authors.
We bring prominent or rising scholars, journalists, poets and other writers to discuss their new books. We choose cutting-edge works that offer independent perspectives, often breaking from established stereotypes. In our Fall 2009-Spring 2010 season, our authors were John Esposito, Abdul-Aziz Sachedina, Anouar Majid, Jonathan Curiel and Wajahat Ali.
The format is a live, onstage conversation between the author, a local Muslim or
interfaith leader, and Islam and Authors host Jason van Boom. In our conversations, we explore both the book and the author’s story behind his or her writing. We then have an audience question-and-answer session and book signing.
Everyone is welcome, regardless of belief or background. No special attire is required.
